I know someone already asked this (me?), but why can't we simply attach pdf files (or anything...) to these posts? Is it about $$, difficulty, or what?

Thanks!

Jeremy would know the answer for sure, but I don't think there's any storage space on these types of free hosted forums. It may be that for more cash they do come with storage space, but I don't remember off-hand. Hopefully Jeremy will come to the rescue  Undecided

The free hosted sites allow very little storage, and for what it would cost to upgrade the hosted forum one could make their own forum without ads and such, or they could put their own ads on to help pay for the hosting costs, but you need so many views per month to really bring anything in that would be helpful.

If I knew the hosting plan the owner of the VoxSaeculorum.org had then I may be able to install an SMF forum right onto the site and not have to use this free hosting thing. But right now I don't know which package they purchased with the domain name and if it hosts PHP.

Do you have any details on that, Grant?

No, Mark's the guy who'd have the answers. I know how to get into the guts of the Vox site, but don't know the details of it...

Omnis.com is the company we're hosted under. I don't have time right now to log in to check what plan I have, but it's like $39.95 every quarter I think.

Yeah, but all I know how to do is put the "key in the door" and open it. I have no idea how one would actually put a forum kind of thing into the Vox site itself. There may be a way but don't look at me  Shocked

At that price you are able to host a forum. It would be something like www.voxsaeculorum.org/forum/index.php

It's actually really easy to get a forum up and going using the SMF software. All you'd have to do is make another page directory like you've done with the front page on Vox and the members list page, etc.. And then you'd install the SMF software (which is free) into that directory, which would be forum. With what you're paying now you have a good sized storage so people could upload PDF's and mp3's.

So yeah, with what you're paying we should start setting up a forum on the actual voxsaeculorum page and dump this one. Then there would be no ads on the page, people would be able to upload pdf's and mp3's, etc., etc.. Plus, you never have to worry about the free host of this forum deciding to shut down his services and there goes your forum.

If its cool with Mark and you know how to do it, I'm all for it! How many pdf's and mp3's can a site usually store? would these files need to get deleted from time to time, or could months and year's worth be kept?

Also, would we then just make an announcement to the forum subscribers to resubscribe to the new one or could they just be transferred somehow?

If Mark is paying 39.95 per quarter, then I'm almost certain you'd have a large storage, which would be able to store pdf's and mp3's for quite some time. You may want to go in and remove some stuff every year or so. But I would still suggest adding the mp3's to something like soundclick and linking the mp3, like we see on youngcomposers.

And yeah, we'd make an announcement here that we're moving over to a forum hosted on the voxsaeculorum.org domain. Then we could just leave this one for a month or two until everyone signed up over there. It would be better to build a forum on the Vox domain, because then you'd own the forum and don't have to worry about it getting deleted if the free hosting of smfforfree shuts down. The layout of the forum would be similiar to this one but better.

If you want me to set it up on the Vox domain then you'd have to give me access to the site, after I set up the forum you can just change the password and block me out and I'll work from the forum under admin login.

Let me know.  Smiley

Green light for Grant to pass the information on to Jeremy.

Jeremy, you know anything about a cheap/free way to show up near the top of Google searches? It's for a project unrelated to this.

The only way I know to do that is to pick an original domain name and get page hits/views. If there's a way you can promote your site to increase page views that would help.

First, I need to know if you have the Linux/Unix or Windows hosting? If it's windows then it won't work.
