Here is a free program to convert midi into mp3 using sondfonts: http://www.synthfont.com/And here's a program you load into the program above to give the pieces reverb: http://www.dasample.com/index.php?show=glaceverbYou can get different soundfonts from various sites. I'll show you how to set up synthfont. Here's what it will look like after you load the midi: I put a red 1-4, to show the steps. 1.) How to load the Glaceverb/Reverb. Click the "Add effects" button, and you'll see a screen like this: From there, add the file and click ok. Then make sure the GlaceVerb is checked: 2.) Where the red 2 is click "File" and locate your soundfont and load it. 3.) Click the SF2 button by the red 3 to select your instrument. 4.) Click "To File" at the top by the red 4, and you can save as mp3. And after you select all that you hit to play button to save it, once it plays through it's saved.

For Harpsichord I just use the SGM one, but you can search around online for free soundfonts and should be able to find some decent ones.

But once found and downloaded, how are they "installed" to make use of them?

In the picture above where you see the red 2, it says "file" just click that and select the file and it will load it into synthfont. If the soundfont is in a zip folder just unzip it first and then select it.

Who here actually knows how to make soundfonts?
I tried a few years back and it was a disaster--trying to record various instruments in different registers, then fine-tuning the resultant *.wav files, then adjusting the attack and decay.
But if anyone knows how to do it, I'd be happy to record *.wav files of several types of Baroque violin, viola, bass gamba, and harpsichord for processing into soundfonts. String soundfonts suck as they are now.
Maybe we could even sell them (but give them out free to members, of course)

I'm not sure how hard it is to make them, but I can look into it this week. And you're right, the string ones are poor...

I'm sorry. I totally forgot all about it. I'll write it down.

Thanks, I'll try it. Personally I use MIDI Converter Studio. It's not free but there is a basic freeware version for 30 days floating around somewhere. A file 5 minutes long it converts in 15 seconds! It saves my time significantly.
